Do I need a permit to build a shed on my property?
What are setbacks and how do I determine mine?

When is a grading permit required?
- If you cut and fill > 100 cubic yards combined.
- If you live in the Coastal Zone, any grading would be reviewed to identify if a Planning permit is required.
- A fill >1 foot and intended to support a structure.
- A cut over two feet deep.
- Grading on slopes greater than 25%.
- Erosion/drainage issues
What are the regulations regarding storage or parking of commercial vehicles in residential zones?
- Not allowed in certain zones.
- Check with Planning Services.
Can I legalize an addition or detached structure that was constructed without permits?
- Yes, but it will depend on the size and zoning regulations.
Can someone live in a recreational vehicle on private property?
- Temporarily during construction, but an active construction permit is required including a Planning permit.
The violation existed before I bought the property. Why am I responsible for clearing the violation?
- Code enforcement violations run with the property not with the past owner.
A Notice of Violation has been recorded on my parcel. How can I get it removed?
- Clear the violation.
- Pay any Administrative costs and fees.
- Two separate checks are required; one for recording fees and one for the Administrative costs/fees.
Can I operate a business out of my home?
- Check with Planning Services for your zoning regulations.
Who can obtain information about my case?
- A code enforcement case is considered confidential unless permission is granted by the owner to release information. A written letter is required from the property owner. An Agent Authorization form is available for this purpose.
How do I apply for an extension to my Compliance Order Corrective Action due dates?
Write a letter, directed to the Code Compliance, stating the following:
- Request a specific amount of time with a specific date. Generally, any request past three months will need further review.
- State why the extension is requested.
- Actions you have taken to abate violations to date.
Who do I contact to obtain public records for a code enforcement case?
- A Records Request must be submitted. The form can be submitted by phone, downloading the request form and faxing, email, or at our office, 1441 Schilling Place - 2nd Floor South - Salinas, CA 93901 - Phone - (831) 755-5025.
Do I have to give the Code Enforcement Inspector access to my property?
- No, but Development Services can obtain an Inspection Warrant to obtain access to your property.
