Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT)
Introduction
The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) in the County of Monterey is a tax of 10.5% of the rent charged to transient guests in hotels/motels and homes rented by owners located in the unincorporated areas of Monterey County. The TOT is commonly known as a “bed tax” or “hotel tax”.
The Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) revenues benefit programs to stimulate tourism, promote the economy, create jobs, and/or a better quality of life in Monterey County. Entities and activities currently funded are economic and agricultural development, cultural heritage tourism, cultural arts programs, the film commission, the Monterey County Visitor & Convention Bureau and other similar institutions/organizations which promote and generate tourism and/or economic development within Monterey County.
