On April 12, 2023 the White House officially designated fentanyl adulterated or associated with xylazine as an emerging threat to the U.S. Xylazine is a veterinary sedative with no approval for human use and is increasingly present in overdose deaths in the United States, compounding the overdose crisis. California healthcare providers and community-based organizations serving people who use drugs should be vigilant for the presence of xylazine.
