2023 WINTER STORM/ ATMOSPHERIC RIVER

Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste Chemical Storage Inventory

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RELEASE AND POTENTIAL PROPERTY DAMAGE

Chemical Storage, including fertilizers and pesticides should be property stored and secured to prevent release and property damage.  During very wet weather the likelihood of a release is potentially high and all measure of preventive steps shall be implemented

  • If possible, don't use the field equipment if the soil is saturated and flooded. We highly recommend securing all drums and containers to prevent releases or spills during this time.
  • Ensure all portable gas cylinders are securely chained and covers are secured on the regulator.  If flooding occurs, floating cylinders that are still pressurized are a major safety risk for depressurizing that can cause the cylinder to become a projectile.
  • Ensure all hazardous materials and hazardous waste containers are covered and the lids are secured.

For those facilities or businesses that handle acutely hazardous materials such as anhydrous ammonia and chlorine gases ensure to follow your Risk Management Plan.  For Ammonia System Diffuser Sanitary Sewer Discharge contact Monterey One Water Wastewater treatment center at 831-883-6131 for notification of releases and updates to the flood response activities.  Monterey One Water website is www.MontereyOneWater.org
