Latest Updates

The Army has identified two areas on the former Fort Ord to conduct a prescribed burn. These burns are required as an important part of the munitions cleanup. The burns encourage recovery of the rare, threatened and endangered fire-dependent plant species. In addition, prescribed burns can reduce excessive vegetation, which, in turn, reduces the risk of wildfire.

The Fort Ord prescribed burn season begins July 1st. The Army intends to conduct a prescribed burn as soon as weather permits, which can be as early as July 1. The Army will not consider mobilizing for a prescribed burn until all the proper conditions are met, including the availability of fire resources (equipment, fire professionals, etc.). Another key condition is the weather. We typically see these very specific weather conditions in the Fall (September/October).

Enroll with the Direct Notification Program to be notified when a prescribed burn is imminent, and when a prescribed burn is started, and when it’s complete. You can enroll for this program on line at http://fortordcleanup.com/prescribed-burns/notification/register/ or by calling 1-800-852-9699. Direct notification will be provided by telephone, text, or e-mail or a combination of these.

Because contact information may change, if you enrolled in the direct notification program in prior years, we ask you to re-enroll for the program this year. The Army will use your contact information only to provide prescribed burn update information. We do not share your information.

Additional burn information is available in the prescribed burn section of www.FortOrdCleanup.com. Questions? Call 1-800-852-9699 or send an e-mail to Melissa.M.Broadston.ctr@mail.mil.
