Education and outreach
The HMMS conducts education and outreach activities, to educate members of the regulated community and the general public, about how to protect workers, the public and the environment, and about environmental laws and regulations. The HMMS also conducts enforcement activities, including issuing notices of violation and referring cases to the Office of the District Attorney, for violations of environmental laws and regulations.
North & South County Workshops
The Hazardous Materials Management Service sponsors two education and outreach workshops per year. In the fall, we host a north County workshop tailored to address the needs of hazardous materials handling and hazardous waste generating businesses. In the spring, our second workshop in the south County, expands that knowledge base to include issues related to the agricultural industry.
Recent Educational Events
The Hazardous Materials Management Service of the Environmental Health Bureau recently hosted the 2019 North County Environmental Compliance Workshop. This year their keynote speaker was Monterey County Board Supervisor Chris Lopez! Mr. Lopez, who shared our common goal of human health and environmental protection. The theme of this year’s program was “Compliance HAZ Never Been So Easy”. This Workshop was designed to give you the tools you needed to get into compliance and stay there! Presentations included a variety of regulatory topics and compliance tips in the areas of CERS, hazardous waste, acutely hazardous materials, air quality, regulation of cannabis, hazardous waste in the trash and, of course, how to get an "A" on your inspection!
The event was held at the Salinas Community Center in Sherwood Hall and lasted from 8:00am-12:00pm.
