Residential Waste Diversion Program
To support and increase residents’ efforts to divert waste and ensure compliance with State requirements, Recycling Services ensures that simple, convenient solutions to divert waste at home are available to residents. In addition to the standard collection services (Brochure-English), the following convenient curbside collection services are also available:
- Used motor oil and oil filters
- Household batteries
- Electronics and Bulky items (e.g., furniture and appliances)
- Holiday Tree-cycling
Some household items cannot be collected through curbside collection at this time. Click on the links below to find out how to properly dispose of:

Recycling is also available to residents of multi-family complexes, including apartments, condos, and employee housing.

Free Recycling of up to 2.5 Gallons of used oil & 1 filter
Monterey County Garbage Service subscribers with cart service can recycle up to 2.5 gallons of used oil and one filter a week when they use the container and filter bag provided by their garbage company. Call your garbage company for more information on how to obtain one free.
Household Batteries (unincorporated county residents only)
Household batteries including rechargeable and cell phone batteries can be recycled curbside by placing them in a clear plastic bag, sealing shut and taping it to the top of the recycle cart.

Bulky Pick-Up from Hauler
Unincorporated Monterey County
Waste Management provides bulky item pickup service to residents in Unincorporated Monterey County and King City for free once per year. Only 3 cubic yards or 3 bulky items per pick up. Large, bulky items must be placed on the curb by 6 a.m. For more information or to request a bulky item pick-up please visit www.wm.com/us/en/support/request-bulk-pickup or call (800) 321-8226. Fees apply for commercial businesses.
Mattress Drop off Monterey County
Residents:
Free drop off of 5 or fewer mattresses or box springs from residences only.
Commercial/ Businesses:
Will be charged $5 for each mattress and box spring.

Electronic and bulky items (unincorporated county residents only)
Each residential customer receives one (1) free on-call collection services per calendar year. Call Waste Management at 800-321-8226 to schedule your pick up today. Items should be set out within 3 feet from the curb. These items should be placed loosely on the curb and cannot exceed 5 cubic yards.
Universal waste (except fluorescent tubes) and E-waste up to 0.5 cubic yards can be included as part of your bulky waste pick-up but must be bagged or placed in a box or container.
