Resilient Monterey County Dashboards - Climate Change
Published on July 11, 2017. Last modified on July 05, 2024
Resilient Monterey County Dashboards are intended to tell a story about how climate change is affecting health, with sections and uses for decision-makers, county staff, and the general public. They are meant to educate and empower anyone who wants to learn what qualities can make their communities stronger and healthier. Fostering community strengths allows people to work toward effective solutions for many, seemingly unrelated problems. The same qualities that strengthen people and communities to overcome difficulties following natural processes such as fires, severe storms, or climate change, can be instrumental in the face of long term economic downturns or other community stressors.
The Dashboards track measures that reflect a community’s strengths such as school connectedness or educational attainment, as well as vulnerabilities like housing affordability or self-reported health. These factors reflect how community resilience is changing over time. The Climate and Health Dashboard explores how long term trends in climate patterns can affect health outcomes for community members. The Health Co-Benefits of Active Transportation Dashboard tracks health measures that can be improved by physical activity.
Dashboards are meant to foster civic engagement, offering citizens a change to get involved in community planning by encouraging their leaders to make choices that will make their communities healthier and more resilient into the future. The Resilient Monterey County Dashboards were developed as a prototype to monitor indicators related to the Monterey County Climate Action Plan (CAP) and Monterey County Health Department’s Health in All Policies work. The indicators on the dashboards were selected by county staff with input by community partners. The dashboards were developed by Raimi and Associates with feedback from county staff and community partners.
