Keeping Medi-Cal Beneficiaries Covered After the Pandemic
The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency will end soon, and millions of Medi-Cal beneficiaries may lose their coverages. The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) top goal is to minimize beneficiary burden and promote continuity of coverage. Planning for the End of the Continuous Coverage Requirement
Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal is California’s public health care insurance program. Medi-Cal is administered through the Department of Health Care Services supported by federal and state funding. Medi-Cal coverage has been available to individuals of all ages based on eligibility criteria through the Affordable Care Act since January 1, 2014.
Important News: Older Adult Medi-Cal Expansion
Beginning May 1, 2022, a new law in California will provide full-scope Medi-Cal to qualifying Adults 50 years of age or older regardless their immigration status.
What does Medi-Cal cover?
Medi-Cal covers health, dental, and vision services. Individuals who are found to be eligible will have coverage in the following services:

Outpatient (Ambulatory) services

Emergency services
-
Hospitalizations
-
Maternity and Newborn
-
Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services

Prescriptions Drugs
-
Laboratory Services
-
Preventative and wellness services and chronic disease management among other services.
Dental Benefits Include:

Cleanings
-
Fillings
-
Anterior root canals (front teeth)

Other medically necessary dental services
What are the eligibility qualifications?
Medi-Cal is available to California residents and is based on income, property, and household tax filing status. An eligibility worker will make the termination based on information provided if applying recipient is eligible or not.
Note: coverage is available to those who meet eligibility criteria, such as being a resident of California and being a US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, or child under age 19. Legal status does not apply for individuals 50 and older under the Medi-Cal Expansion.
