Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of populations. Public health professionals:

  • Teach groups of people how to reduce their risk of illness and injuries.
  • Investigate causes of diseases and controlling their spread.
  • Advocate for public health policies and laws.
  • Conduct research to determine community health trends.
  • Help healthcare facilities to prepare for disasters like fires, floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes.
  • Work to improve maternal and early childhood health.

Specific programs include: Children’s Medical Services; Childhood Lead Prevention Program; Communicable Disease Prevention and Control; Public Health Laboratory; Women’s, Infants, and Children’s Program; CalFresh Health Living; Tobacco Control; and Community Based Nursing which conducts home visits related to health needs.
