The Agricultural Commissioner and Sealer of Weights and Measures works to promote and protect agriculture, the environment and public welfare, and to assure consumer and business confidence in the marketplace.
- Agricultural Product Quality and Marketing
- Industry funded produce inspection programs, seed and nursery licensing and inspections, direct marketing through certified producers and farmer’s markets, California state organic registration, Monterey County Certified Organic, tracking and compiling county agricultural statistics (Crop Reports).
- Pesticide Use & Enforcement
- Pesticide use enforcement, restricted materials permits and inspections, worker protection standards, pesticide applicators registrations and continuing education, pesticide violation investigations, monitoring and residue sampling for fumigants, spray drift, schools and sensitive sites, and environmental justice.
- Pest & Disease Prevention
- Pest and disease information, regulation and inspection of incoming agricultural shipments, implementation of quarantines and host-free periods, high-risk pest exclusion programs, environmental monitoring for pest presence and populations, conventional and biological control of insect and vertebrate pests, bees and apiaries, and predatory animal control.
- Environmental & External Affairs
- The Agricultural Commissioner actively engages in locally-relevant issues such as food safety and environmental resource protection, and provides support for county-wide educational and leadership programs.
