Eggs

The Agricultural Commissioner’s Office conducts Egg Inspections at grocery and convenience stores throughout Monterey County. We perform inspections to confirm that egg producers and retailers are following State and Federal Guidelines with regards to proper Labeling, Grading, and Quality Standards for chicken and other species fowl eggs sold for human consumption. Every container of eggs must have specific information displayed on the container. This includes being marked with IRQ Standards, which are as follows:

  • I - Identity = species (for example, chicken eggs or duck eggs)
  • R - Responsibility = who produced the eggs (farm name, address, and zip code)
  • Q - Quantity = number of eggs in the container
