Once flooding happens, access to your farm may not be an option.
Here are some tasks that you should do today.
Understanding Storms and Flood Risks
Flooding is the accumulation of water where usually none occurs or the overflow of excess water from a stream, river, lake, reservoir, or coastal body onto adjacent floodplains.
Floods are natural events that are considered hazards only when people and property are affected.
Be Proactive & Prepare
- Move Equipment: Move to higher ground away from flood prone or inundation prone areas.
- Move Pesticides and Other Chemicals to a Safe Area: It is imperative that you secure above-ground storage tanks and consider storing pesticides away from flood-prone areas to avoid contamination. Other chemical such as fuels or fertilizers should also be secured and stored in safe locations.
When storing pesticides and other chemicals, it is important to continue to follow all regulatory labeling and storing requirements.
For example, pesticides must be stored in a locked enclosure and storage areas must be posted with the following:
- Danger.
- Poison Storage Area.
- All Unauthorized Persons Keep Out.
- Keep Door Locked When Not In Use.
To report a spillage:
- During business hours, call Emergency Response at Environmental Health at 831-755-4508 or 831-755-4511.
- For emergencies after hours, call 911.
