SB1383 Organics Recycling
Food Scrap collection is now part of California’s legislation (SB 1383 Lara, Chapter 395, Statues of 2016) addressing climate pollutants and wasted food. SB 1383 goals include:
- Reduce organic waste disposal 50% by 2020 and 75% by 2025.
- Rescue for people to eat at least 20% of currently disposed surplus food by 2025.
Why is SB 1383 important?
- Landfills are the third largest source of ethane in the state.
- Organic waste in landfills accounts for 20% of California's methane emissions.
- Methane is a super pollutant, 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
- Organic materials (food scraps, yard waste, paper, cardboard) make up 50% of landfill content.
- Reducing organic waste can have a rapid impact on the climate crisis.
SB 1383 impacts residents and commercial businesses including schools and multifamily complexes, it also requires certain businesses to recover edible food by donating to local food banks or non-profit organizations to feed people.
The County of Monterey adopted Chapter 10.45 Organic Waste Disposal Reduction Ordinance to comply with SB 1383.
