What is Fluoride and How Does It Affect My Teeth?

Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally found in rocks, soil, and natural water sources. It builds strong teeth and prevents cavities. When you eat foods that contain high amounts of sugar, the bacteria in the mouth mixes with the sugars and produces acid that damages/weakens your tooth enamel. Fluoride can help protect your teeth by making them stronger and more resistant to that acid.

What Are the Benefits of Fluoride?

Fluoride helps rebuild and strengthen tooth enamel (the outer protective layer of teeth) that has been weakened by the bacteria that causes cavities. It prevents cavities and slows down the loss of minerals from the tooth’s enamel. It can also help reverse the early signs of cavities by strengthening teeth which can stop further decay from penetrating the deeper layers of teeth.

In What Forms is Fluoride Available?

Fluoride can be delivered topically and systematically. Topical modes Include toothpaste, mouthwashes, fluoride varnish (applied by dental professionals). Systematic Systematic modes include fluoride water and dietary supplements (prescribed by health professionals).
