Nutrition Education Obesity Prevention Grant
The Nutrition Education Obesity Prevention Program (NEOP) is part of the Nutrition Services Branch of the Monterey County Health Department, working to increase health, reduce obesity, and educate the community to adopt and maintain healthy eating, activity, and lifestyle choices.
Locally known as CalFresh Healthy Living, the initiative brings together a broad range of community partners to implement comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention strategies, that empower families and communities with information and resources to create healthier environments.
In Monterey County, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is higher among low-income adults. Social determinants related to obesity include, but are not limited to, economic factors, access to healthy food and physical activity opportunities.
- In 2007, Monterey County had the highest rate out of all California counties of adults in households where healthy food was not readily available and accessible. (Source: CHIS 2007)
- In 2009 and 2011-12 combined, 40% of Monterey County adults ages 18+ were overweight and 23% were obese.
- According to the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), 9.5% of Monterey County children and teens do not have a park or open space within walking distance. (2009)
