The STRYVE Program began in 2011, at the Monterey County Health Department with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).Monterey County was one of four public health departments in the country to receive this funding.  From 2011 to 2016 the goal of STRYVE was to prevent youth violence and with a second grant starting in 2016, CDC added the prevention of teen dating violence to youth violence.  Using a public health approach that focuses on prevention, STRYVE has implemented evidence based programs, become part of a multisector coalition, conducted an evaluation and helped update our coalition’s violence reduction comprehensive plan.  STRYVE is part of the Community Alliance for Safety and Peace (CASP), which focuses on violence in Salinas, California.

And prevention is working!  The violent crime rate, number of juvenile arrests, and violent assaults of youth between the ages of 10 and 24 in Salinas has declined significantly over the last seven years.  However, challenges remain in a number of areas, including homicides.
