Pesticide applications made for the production on an agricultural commodity within ¼ mile (1,320 feet) of a school site contain standards to minimum distance of application and method of application and require annual notifications to school sites.

School sites include public K-12 schools, licensed childcare facilities, and adjacent parks regularly used by a school site, as identified by the County Agricultural Commissioner.

The goal is to reduce the chances of unintended pesticide exposure to children and increase communication between growers, County Agricultural Commissioners, and school sites.

If a site is within the school boundary of ¼ mile (1,320 feet), the property operator can submit school site notifications, alter and submit the list of pesticides expected to be used within the site, and alter grower contact information through CalAgPermits.org

The property operator must provide an annual notification to the school site and the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner by April 30 that includes contact information and a list of all pesticides expected to be used within ¼ mile of the school site during July of this year through June of the following year. New property operators (through land purchase or lease) must provide first notification within 30 days of assuming control of property.

The property operator must keep a record of this information with this permit for two years and make it promptly available to the commissioner upon request.

Authorized school site administrators can navigate to verify/update the school site boundary, update contact information, and view current notifications by logging in to CalSchoolNotify.org.

Farming Safely Near Schools is part of a model communications network designed to notify the Monterey County school communities of Ohlone Elementary and Pajaro Middle School in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, Hall District Elementary and the North Monterey County Unified School District before a fumigant is applied on a farm within a quarter of a mile from school grounds. This website was developed to provide parents, teachers, students, school employees and the community with information about fumigant use on farmland adjacent to these schools.

The communications notification network is a pilot project undertaken by the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office with funding provided by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. The pilot project is the first of its kind in the nation.
