Safety: Fuels are flammable and can be dangerous if not handled properly.  Fully insert fuel filler nozzle into the vehicle’s fill neck pipe, otherwise pressure will build and result in a fuel spill and possible discharge of the nozzle-hose assembly. Always remain outside your vehicle and in full view of the nozzle while refueling. DO NOT smoke or use a cell phone in the vicinity of the fueling station and do not re-enter the vehicle while fueling—static electricity can cause the fuel to ignite.

To fill an approved metal or plastic portable fuel container, avoid the hazardous practice of leaving the portable gasoline containers in pickup trucks or cars when refueling! Before filling, always remove the containers from the vehicle and place them on the ground at a safe distance from the vehicle (provides path to dissipate static charge to ground). Never fill the container while it’s inside the vehicle, trailer, or on the bed of a pickup truck or boat. Touch the container with the gas dispenser nozzle before removing the container lid (provides another path to dissipate static charge to ground). Keep the nozzle in contact with the container inlet when filling (to dissipate static charge buildup from flow of gasoline). Latch open devices shall not be engaged while dispensing flammable or combustible liquids into portable containers.

Emergencies: In case of small gasoline or diesel fuel spillage, cover spill with absorbent material.  For a major spill and/or fire, press the fuel station’s emergency shut-off button and call 911.

Leak/Spill Reporting: Contact Service Station attendant or call Fleet Management at 755-4962/4949. In case of CNG leak, immediately turn off fuel pump at the fuel pump dispenser. All spills, leaks or equipment malfunction are reportable.

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Vehicle/Equipment Instructions

1. Locate recommended fuel type. Turn off vehicle engine.
2. Scan fuel chip with wand (coiled colored lead), located normally inside the vehicle/equipment fuel door.
3. Enter correct vehicle mileage or equipment hour reading and your employee number at the fuel information center.
4. Remove fueling nozzle and turn on fuel pump activator lever.
5. Insert fuel nozzle into vehicle/equipment fuel tank and begin fueling. Do not top off.
6. When fueling is complete, remove fueling nozzle from vehicle/equipment.
7. Turn off fuel pump activator lever and return fueling nozzle.

Compressed Natural Gas Fuel Vehicle/Equipment Instructions

1. Locate CNG fuel station. Turn off vehicle engine.
2. Scan fuel chip with wand (coiled colored lead), located normally inside the vehicle/equipment fuel door.
3. Enter correct vehicle mileage or equipment hour reading and your employee number at the fuel information center.
4. Remove fueling nozzle.
5. Attach fuel nozzle to vehicle/equipment fuel tank. Turn on fuel nozzle valve.
6. Turn fuel pump activator lever. The CNG dispenser pump will stop pumping when vehicle/equipment fuel tank is full.
7. When fueling is complete, turn off fuel pump activator lever, turn off fueling nozzle valve, allow pressure to vent.
8. Remove fueling nozzle from vehicle/equipment fuel tank.
9. Return fueling nozzle.

1. Determine if the gas station island dispenser has the Voyager logo (typically displayed with other logos such as Visa, Master Card, etc.). If visible, you may use the Voyager card.
2. Swipe your card at the island terminal. Note – if the terminal at the pump fails to read your Voyager card, see the gas station attendant.
3. Choose “credit” if prompted to choose between the “credit” or “debit” key.
4. Provide the PIN or ID number, then press “enter”.
5. If required, enter the vehicle’s odometer reading. Enter as a whole number only.
6. Secure a receipt after fueling is completed.

Fuel Saving Tips

The increased cost of petroleum products has brought into sharper focus the need to use County vehicles more efficiently. Listed below are several ways that an individual can begin to save on fuel usage and cost.

• Keep your County vehicle properly tuned. (Fuel savings of up to 30% is achievable when the engine is properly tuned)

• Check and replace air filters regularly. (Replacing filters regularly can improve fuel efficiency by up to 10%)

• Change engine oil and replace oil filters regularly. (Fuel efficiency can be improved by as much as 10%)

• Keep your engine warm to save fuel. (Removing your thermostat can cause your engine to consume 30% more fuel!)

• Keep your tires properly inflated. (Fuel efficiency can be improved by as much as 3% with properly inflated tires)

• Use the air conditioner sparingly. (Operating an air conditioner in hot weather can increase fuel consumption by 20% in city driving)

The elimination of wastage through efficient operation of vehicles and improved driving habits will help reduce fuel consumption, and lower fuel costs for individual departments. Measures such as regular and timely Preventive Maintenances (PM’s), Properly inflated tires, judicious use of air conditioning, and driving at prescribed speed limits are all measures that can and will save fuel thus lowering fuel costs.

Some additional cost saving techniques for fuel consumption are, avoid aggressive driving “Jack Rabbit” starts, drive steadily at posted speed limits, avoid idling your vehicle for long periods of time, use your cruise control on long stretches, monitor power accessories, plan your trip, avoid excessive round trips, remove excess clutter or weight from the vehicle, keep your vehicle clean as dirt creates drag, roll your windows up, anticipate stops.

Finally, ask Fleet Management to assist in acquiring alternative fueled vehicles to replace your existing vehicles as they become due for replacement. These environmentally friendly models are far more fuel efficient and less taxing on your operating budget.
