About Castroville Branch
Juan Bautista Castro founded the town of Castroville in 1863 or 1864 (historians disagree on the year). He cut up his land and offered inducements to settlers because he saw the development of the county depended upon subdividing and settling the large ranches. In 1869, Monterey County supervisors created the township of Castroville.
The Castroville Branch Library celebrated its own centennial in 2014 and has enjoyed a colorful and varied history in serving the town known for its nearby agricultural fields of artichokes. Founded in 1914, the library has survived and flourished in homes, post offices, hardware stores, novelty stores, and now a state-of-the-art library facility under the care of numerous, dedicated people.
