Workplace Equipment Inspections
Workplace equipment inspections are a valuable tool for multiple reasons. Inspections can help identify problems with equipment before they are discovered during use, they can often keep repairs to a minimum avoiding larger repairs or full replacement, and when conducted frequently can help employees become more comfortable with the equipment.
Basic Types of Workplace Equipment
First Aid Kit/Cabinet: There shall be adequate first-aid materials, approved by a consulting physician, readily available for employees on every job. Such materials shall be kept in a sanitary and usable condition.
-
Inspection: A frequent inspection shall be made of all first-aid materials, which shall be replenished as necessary.
- Inspection: Self-contained eyewashes shall be visually checked weekly to determine if flushing fluid needs to be changed or supplemented. Such inspection shall be conducted in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Fire Extinguishers: Where portable fire extinguishers are provided for employee use, they shall be selected and distributed based on the classes of anticipated work place fires and on the size and degree of hazard which would affect their use.
- Inspection: Portable extinguishers shall be visually inspected monthly and be subject to an annual maintenance check. In addition, portable extinguishers must be hydrostatically tested at intervals listed in Table L-1 of §6151 Portable Fire Extinguishers.
