5 Things for September from Monterey County Free Libraries

1. September is Library Card Sign-up month, and our goal is for all residents of Monterey County to have a library card and utilize library services. Libraries give you access to more than just free books and movies. We offer puzzle exchanges, have toys available for play, arts & crafts to inspire and much more. We are community hubs and function, on occasion, as Cooling Centers during extreme heat or Temporary Evacuation Points during flooding or fires. Visit your local library to see all we have to offer.

2. During September we are getting the word out about shifting the open hours at some of our branches. Hours are being adjusted to better meet the needs of the community, however, all branches will continue to be open the same number of hours per week. Check with your local MCFL branch to see what’s changing. New hours go into effect on October 1, 2024.

3. From September 15 through October 15, we celebrate Latino Heritage Month when we recognize and lift the voices of Latino authors. Check our Facebook and Instagram pages on Tuesday mornings for the author of the week. Visit our branches for special craft programs and book displays.

4. September 8 is International Literacy Day. Set up by UNESCO in 1967 International Literacy Day emphasizes the importance of literacy in creating a literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable world. MCFL has an Adult Literacy program pairing tutors and learners. MCFL also visits preschools throughout the county in our Lean Green Reading Machine with early literacy and science literacy curriculums for young children. You can learn more about these programs on our webpage.

5. Online is how most of us learn these days. “Google” is now a verb synonymous with online searching. Many people tap into, “YouTube University” to learn a skill. September is Online Learning Month and MCFL has a page with Online Resources that link to resources with vetted information such as SIRS Issues Researcher, Masterfile Premier and Explora, and resources that help you discover such as A to Z the USA, National Geographic Kids and Science. Visit the Online Resources to explore these sites.

In recognition of Labor Day, MCFL branches will be closed on Saturday, August 31. Seaside Branch and the Administrative Office will also be closed on Monday, September 2.

We look forward to seeing you at the library soon!
