Children in the Library
Mission:
The mission of Monterey County Free Libraries is to bring ideas, inspiration, information and enjoyment to our community.
Monterey County Free Libraries is committed to providing a welcoming environment for children. Our Library staff is available to assist you and your child in choosing appropriate materials. The Library also offers special programs designed specifically for children—check with your local branch for details. Please review the information below to ensure proper use of the library.
- All library users, regardless of age, are expected to be able to function independently and to be able to communicate at an appropriate level.
- Children under the age of 7 must not be left unattended in the Library. If a responsible parent/caregiver for a child under age 7 is not located in the Library, the appropriate law enforcement agency may be called for the safety and protection of the child.
- Minors are required to act appropriately in the Library, whether supervised by a responsible parent/caregiver or not, and should not be left unsupervised if unable to act appropriately.
- Any person whose behavior interferes with the use of the Library by others could be asked to leave, or the appropriate authorities may be called.
- Library staff does not limit choices or censor materials checked out by children.
- Computers and Internet access are available in the Library. Library staff does not monitor the Internet use of children.
- Parents are responsible for paying overdue fines and are financially responsible for replacement costs and damage fees incurred by their children. California law prohibits non-patron access to the library records of any person, including children, unless that person has signed a waiver or it is ordered by the court.
