The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office remains committed to all victims of crime, even those who are still awaiting justice, long after the crime was committed.

The newly-established Monterey County District Attorney’s Office Cold Case Task Force will be the largest and most comprehensive effort in the county’s history to identify, review, and collaboratively re-investigate unresolved homicide cases, missing persons cases with foul play suspected, and cases of unidentified human remains throughout Monterey County.

The Task Force, which will include seasoned investigators from all local law-enforcement agencies, the District Attorney’s Office, and a dedicated prosecutor, will create and compile a database of all unresolved cold cases in the county, which will be reviewed, examined for physical evidence that could be tested or re-tested using current technologies, and categorized based on established factors affecting their likelihood of solvability. Cases with untested physical evidence will be prioritized, but the Task Force will actively pursue cases with existing physical evidence that can be re-evaluated using new technologies not available at the time the evidence was tested.

For cases where suspect DNA has been detected but not identified through traditional means, the Task Force will examine the possibility of using familial DNA testing and/or genetic genealogy to identify the perpetrators.

Members of the Task Force will select and examine one cold case per month, which the investigating agency will present to the group of investigators and the assigned prosecutor. The Task Force will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the investigation, identify and pursue new investigative leads, assist the case agency with necessary follow-up, and facilitate the testing of any relevant physical evidence. It is the sincere hope of the Task Force that these efforts will result in agencies being able to solve the cases and, if there is a living suspect against whom there is proof beyond a reasonable doubt, prosecute them for their crimes.

The Task Force represents a joint effort of the county’s police chiefs and the District Attorney’s Office, designed to increase inter-agency collaboration, combine the talents and expertise of multiple investigators to examine these unresolved cases with fresh eyes, and to demonstrate to the citizens of Monterey County that these victims and their cases have not been forgotten despite the passage of time.

If you have any information regarding an unsolved case, it may be reported to Chief Ryan McGuirk via email as follows:   McGuirkRJ@co.monterey.ca.us
