Understanding Telehealth

What to Expect During Your Telehealth or Phone Appointment

Telehealth and phone care have quickly become important tools in helping people get the health care they need.  Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about telehealth.

What is telehealth?

Telehealth is the use of microphone and video to deliver your health care services outside of traditional health care facilities.  This includes mental health services.  Telehealth uses technology like internet, iPhones, or other smart phones.

Why should I use telehealth?

The purpose of telehealth is to provide convenient and safe health care services without the need for an in-person visit.

What is the difference between services provided by phone and services provided via telehealth?

Services provided over the phone are audio based only. Telehealth services will include video so you can see your provider, and your provider can see you. Telehealth is a video “chat” for health care.

Why is my provider asking me to use ZOOM for telehealth appointments?

ZOOM is the telehealth program recommended by Monterey County Behavioral Health because it is secure and private.  When your provider meets with you over ZOOM, your treatment is covered by HIPAA privacy and security laws.

Is ZOOM private and confidential?

Yes, ZOOM is a secure telehealth platform.

Is there a cost to use ZOOM?

You can download the ZOOM application for free.  Check with your internet provider or cell phone carrier as message and data rates may apply.

What if I want to use my phone for health care services?

You can receive some health care services by phone.  If you prefer services by phone, let your provider know.
